A Norfolk cricket team's future is unclear because of a lack of younger players who are needed to carry on its legacy.

Norfolk’s Black Sheep Cricket Club in Dereham is pleading for new players to step up to the wicket over fears its older players have reached the end of their careers.

The club’s president and Dereham cricketing stalwart Barry Battelley said the club may be 'all out' if new members were not found.Dereham Times: The Black Sheep cricket team pose for a picture before a fixture at Ashby St Mary Picture: CLUBThe Black Sheep cricket team pose for a picture before a fixture at Ashby St Mary Picture: CLUB (Image: Archant)

Mr Battelley said: “The players who came on the scene in 1989 are into their 70s and 80s, and we are finding it harder to get a team together.

“We cannot seem to get a hold of new players, which is a concern. We ideally want anyone who is packing up cricket, in their 30s or 40s, and of a reasonable playing standard - but almost anyone is welcome."

The club has been going since 1989 and has raised around £100,000 for charities and deserving individuals.

It was formed after a conversation between several former county players including Mr Battelley and the late Tracy Moore, who felt organising a team of senior players could be a good money raiser - and good fun too.

The name came about when sponsorship was received from the Black Sheep Woollen Company at Aylsham. Moore was chosen to be the first Black Sheep captain, 33 years ago.

This year, the club has six fixtures - all taking place on Sundays, apart from one on Wednesday, August 2.

The fixtures are usually once a month over the course of the summer, and the host club makes a donation, generally via a raffle.
