The parents of a young girl suffering from a rare skin condition have spoken out about helping their daughter cope.

Kelvin Barker and Carrie-Ann Tuckwell, from Dereham, have been supporting Charlie-Mai, seven, who suffers from epidermolysis bullosa.

The seven-year-old's rare condition has caused her to have fragile, blistering skin, since birth.

Mr Barker and Miss Tuckwell said Charlie-Mai was born with a lesion on her finger, and her condition was examined by doctors from hospitals across Norfolk from birth before being referred to Great Ormond Street Hospital - where she was diagnosed at 11 months old.

It was there that the family were referred to the charity Debra, which is looking for a cure for the skin disorder.

The family is organising a fishing match and bingo night in July to fundraise for the charity.

Charlie-Mai's parents said: “We’re so scared for when she starts high school as we know how teenage girls like to fit into a certain look.

"We really hope as she grows, she carries on with the confidence she has. No doubt we’ll be calling on the charity for support around this.

“Seeing Charlie-Mai in pain and itchy so much and there isn't much we can do is heartbreaking.”

Debra gave Charlie-Mai special gloves so she could play with sand safely, as well as fans to keep her cool in summer.

The charity has helped to pay for carpets and organised access to a wheelchair, for respite when she gets blisters.

Charlie-Mai said: “I hate my skin because it's really sore and I want to be like everyone else with normal skin.

“I wish this itching would stop. Some have it worse than me so I'm lucky.

"I would like to go to the beach but the sand would cause more friction to my skin. The bingo night will take place on July 28 at 7pm at Gressenhall Social Club. There will be a raffle and a bar. It costs £1 for a flyer or £10 for a book.
