A new project to stop flooding in an A47 underpass is under way.

Locals in the Dereham area who use the underpass to walk between Middlemarch Road and South Green Gardens have been repeatedly stopped in their tracks by flooding after heavy rain.

A CCTV survey by National Highways found that the drainage system under the underpass has collapsed, making it impossible for water to drain away quickly.

National Highways is now nearing completion of a plan which will increase the amount of rainwater that can be captured by the drainage system.

Sarah Taylor, Breckland District Councillor for Toftwood said, “The repeated flooding of the underpass has understandably caused a lot of frustration for local residents and it was pretty obvious little action had been taken over recent years to fix this.

“I had already started talking with National Highways when I received reports of people looking to cross the A47 presumably because the underpass was flooded.

“I’m glad that the issues at the underpass are being taken seriously by National Highways and that their whole team is working to fix it.”

Following several reports of anti-social behaviour in the area, National Highways also plans to replace the fencing alongside the woodland next to the underpass.
