The achievements of young air cadets in Dereham have been recognised at an awards ceremony.

Cadets, staff, committee, parents and friends attended the annual dinner of 1249 (Dereham) Squadron Air Cadets to celebrate the achievements of the squadron over the last year.

Held at South Green Park, Mattishall the evening introduced the cadets to a military dining experience before speeches and presentations.

The year 2016 saw the squadron win a number of awards including being the Wing nomination for the Lees Trophy for the best squadron in the Corps – a nomination the squadron has received for the second year running.

Highlights included the enrolment of a new cadet, and promotions from Cadet to Corporal for Sam Bush, Lucy Kirk, Alex Jarrett, George Rowley and James Partridge. Promotions from Corporal to Sergeant were awarded to Hugo Jones, Evie Williamson and Finlay Bond.

The squadron was delighted to announce that Cpl Bush had been awarded a flying scholarship with Tayside Aviation and Sgt Jones had a place on the prestigious Air Cadet Leadership Course at RAF Cranwell.

Flt Lt Tracey Allan, officer commanding 1249 (Dereham) Squadron, said: “The Air Cadets has now been going for more than 75 years and its longevity is testament to the dedication from everyone involved. The cadets on our squadron have had a fantastic year, getting involved with a huge range of activities with determination and enthusiasm whilst consistently conducting themselves in the highest manner, and our staff have brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to help further develop our cadets. It really is an honour to volunteer for this organisation, and in particular this squadron and I thank them all so much.”

The squadron is hosting an open evening on Monday, April 3 at 7.30pm, where anyone in Year 8 or above, interested in aviation and the Royal Air Force is invited to attend a presentation about what the Air Cadets is all about. For more information, email oc.1249@aircadets.org
