It has gone by the same name for more than four decades.

But now Dereham’s longest-standing chip shop Big Fry has marked its new ownership with a change of name - The Perfect Catch.

New owners Andrew Piller, 41, and partner Maxine Gricks, 44, have 50 years experience in the chippy industry between them and are looking forward to modernising the eatery, based in Market Place.

The couple, who live in the town, are previous Big Fry employees and said they were excited about the challenge ahead.

Mr Piller added: “Moving forward, we want to make the The Perfect Catch a more family friendly environment and more orientated around families. We’ve got a few exciting things the pipelines too.”

He emphasised they would be following in their predecessors footprints and continue helping local charities and groups to “give something back”.

But the new name has already caused a stir on social media, with many taking to Facebook to express their opinions.

Claire Brooks thought it was a “shame” to rename a Dereham “landmark” and added: “Always be Big Fry.

“Everyone knows Big Fry.”

Sam Cranmer said: “Should have kept the name but good luck to new owners.”

While Chris Wilcock added: “That’s it. I’m moving.”

Not everyone was quick to voice their concerns. Others praised the decision.

Ann-Marie Martyn, of Dereham, claimed it sounded “healthier”.

Resident Kevin Yarham said: “The name change is irrelevant.

“Good luck to the new owners.”

Tracey Reynolds added: “So long as the food served is perfect, then the name of the fish shop is fine.”

And Claire McIntyre agreed: “As long as the food doesn’t change!”

Stephen Cross, a director of Gorgate Ltd, said the decision to sell Big Fry was “one of the hardest” the family had to make.

“We felt that we could no longer give the business the necessary time and input to continue to move the business forward,” he said.

“We wish [Andrew and Maxine] every success and hope all our old customers will continue to support the new owners.

“On a personal note I would like to thank all our customers who have helped to make Big Fry the success it has been for over 40 years. Many customers have become friends as well as customers and I will certainly miss the banter.”
