Frustrated Dereham residents have called for traffic restrictions to be introduced in the town after a lorry caused damage to a building.

Witnesses said the lorry knocked a section of brickwork out of the corner of a house on Wellington Road, as it turned left out of St Nicholas Street at around midday today.

Fed-up residents said that this is a regular occurrence on this corner, and warned that a serious incident could take place if nothing is done about it.

The vehicle was also seen to hit a road sign as it reversed to get around the tight corner, and caused damage to the pavement.

The driver allegedly left the scene without stopping to wait for police to arrive.

Residents in the area criticised the driver’s actions. They said that collisions on the corner happen frequently.

Sarah Lane, 40, who lives on the road with her partner, said: “The driver stopped to get round the corner, and then he drove off again. We told him he had to stop while we called the police but he didn’t wait.”

Ms Lane, a council worker from Dereham, described the driver’s choice to use the route as “crazy”. She added: “It’s just too tight to come around here and do this. There’s no leverage to the left or the right of that corner.

“It is scary when these huge lorries come down the street. We had two coaches come past at the weekend and they block all the light from your windows.

“The road needs height and width restrictions to be enforced, or to be made a one way street.”

Ms Lane phoned the police and said they were at the scene within 10 minutes.

Neighbour Gail Brighton, 61, said: “I live on St Nicholas Street and I’ve had two satellite dishes smashed off my house by huge lorries. Last time the police had to attend.”

Miss Brighton, who is a supervisor at an arcade, added that last Saturday two big lorries got stuck on that corner and had to reverse back around.

She said: “Something needs to be done before something serious happens there.”

A spokesperson for Norfolk Police confirmed that they were called to the incident at 12.05pm on Tuesday, December 12, after receiving reports of a lorry in collision with a house.

There are no reports of injuries and police enquiries are ongoing.
