A motorist had a lucky escape after his vehicle collided with a stationary car in Dereham on Saturday morning.

The driver of a Mercedes 4x4 had been driving down Sandy Lane at around 7.45am when he collided with the back of a parked Seat.

The impact caused the parked car to be pushed forward before spinning into a nearby brick wall, while the driver of Mercedes lost control causing their vehicle to overturn.

The incident left one end of the road blocked until around 9.30am.

Gavin Giles, whose son owns the Seat, said the Mercedes collided with the Seat, which was then pushed about 25 feet down the road and into a neighbour’s front garden brick wall.

“My son’s car is a total write off. It has alloy wheels and the one on the passenger side exploded and the suspension was ripped off,” he said.

Marc White, whose garden wall was damaged, said he had just stepped out of his front door and heard the two cars collide and turned to see the Seat had hit his garden wall.

“I was out the front of my house when it happened but I didn’t see it as I had my back to it and was getting my five year old son ready to go out but I heard it all,” he said.

“By the time I turned around I saw the Mercedes on its side down the road and the other car had hit my wall and bounced back into the road. Had my son been ready to go out just a few moments earlier I think we both could easily have been hit.

“After it happened I saw the driver climb out from the window and he had also managed to get his dog out of the car.

“The crash left brake fluid all over the road as the front passenger side wheel had been shattered and the brakes had been disconnected,” he said.

Two police cars and an ambulance were at the scene but there are not thought to have been any injuries. The road was cleared by 9.30am.

A friend of the Mercedes driver said his attention was distracted for a split second. “He is gutted about the whole thing but more importantly he and his dogs are all ok and he’s really relived that no one was hurt.” he said.
