Co-op has confirmed it has no intention of opening a store in Shipdham, near Dereham.
More than 1,000 people have signed a petition opposing plans to build a new convenience store in the village.
The main concerns are over the impact a store could have on the post office, which some residents depend on for their pensions, benefits and over-the-counter banking.
Despite the opposition, the plans were approved by Breckland Council’s planning committee.
Co-op were rumoured to be interested in running the store but residents have received an e mail sent on behalf the Co-op executive team which said the company has no plans to move into Shipdham and adds, “I am at a loss to explain how Co-op has come to be associated with this.”
Concerns still remain that a new store will open.
