The owner of Deepdale Cafe in Burnham Deepdale admitted to driving a Land Rover while being more than twice the drink-drive limit.

Appearing in King’s Lynn Magistrates Court, Sophia Widdowson pleaded guilty to driving while being above the alcohol limit.

The court heard how on Tuesday, August 15, 29-year-old Widdowson, of Old Hunstanton Road, was driving a Land Rover down Hamilton Road at around 9.10pm when she was stopped by a police officer.

Fergus Harold, prosecuting, said the police officer found a number of opened and unopened alcohol containers in her vehicle.

Mr Harold said Widdowson was taken to the King’s Lynn Police investigation centre and was tested for alcohol in her breath.

Her reading came back as 81mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Mitigating for Widdowson, Ruth Johnson said the defendant was on her way home after having an argument with the person she was with.

Mrs Johnson added: “She accepts this is no excuse and her judgement was clouded.

“She is self employed and runs an extremely successful local business in the north Norfolk coast.”

She said whilst Widdowson understood she will be disqualified from driving she accepts it will be “an additional punishment.”

Chairman of the bench, John Hare, said: “Obviously this is an unfortunate incident but I am duty bound to disqualify you.”

Widdowson was disqualified from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay a £200 fine.

She was also ordered to pay £30 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Mr Hare warned the defendant: “If you drive while disqualified you may be sent to custody, so don’t do it.”

Mr Hare asked the defendent whether she would be able to commute to Deepdale Cafe whilst being disqualified from driving, to which she confirmed she would.

Deepdale Cafe is located in Dalegate Market, Burnham Deepdale, a 20 minute journey from Old Hunstanton.

“I’ve heard there is a good bus service there.” Mr Hare added.
