The deputy mayor of a Norfolk town is to stand trial accused of assault.

Thomas Monument, 36, deputy mayor of Dereham, appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court on Tuesday (October 10) having been charged with assault by beating.

Monument, who is also a Dereham town councillor and Breckland district councillor for Dereham Withburga ward, pleaded not guilty to the assault which follows an incident in Norwich on September 11 this year.

A trial has been fixed for December 4 at Norwich Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, who wore a dark suit, blue shirt and purple tie, was visibly upset during the hearing.

Monument, of Greenfields Road, Dereham, was granted conditional bail until the trial.
