Dereham Town Football Club have honoured one of their youth team founders Colin Wright in a pre-season charity match at Aldiss Park.

The game against National League club Braintree Town finished 1-0 to the home side and £415 was raised for the Big C Cancer Charity.

The winners were presented with the Colin Wright memorial trophy and Colin’s son Andrew Wright said his dad would have loved the occasion.

He said: “It was great to see so many people up here enjoying it. He would have absolutely loved today.”

David Wright, another of Colin’s sons, was also in attendance and said it was great to see his dad’s hard work for the club and the town being celebrated.

He said: “He was integral to the youth side of the club and was instrumental when the club moved here, as you can see by the crowd we got down here today.”

This was the second charity game that has been played in his memory following his death from stomach cancer in 2015 aged 69.

He was an important figure around the football club, helping to establish Dereham Town Youth in 1991 and also assisting with the club’s relocation to Aldiss Park in 1996.

Neil Sturman, chairman, said the club has a lot to thank him for.

He said: “I didn’t have the chance to get to know Colin that well but when I first got involved in the club he was one of the first to make me feel welcome.

“Without people like Colin, clubs like ours just don’t move on or survive and it’s important that his name always has a part to play within the club.”

Mr Wright first got involved in football in the early 1980s and also served as a committee member for many years, as well as hosting a popular monthly quiz night before he died in September 2015.

Andrew added: “I coach an under 9’s team up here and we have teams from under 7’s up to under 16’s and a lot of the age groups have two or three teams and it keeps growing.

“It’s great to recognise what he did right at the start of that and how far we’ve grown it now and hopefully that will continue.”
