Archant

A new mural by the Bristol-born graffiti artist Banksy appeared in Dover on Sunday, but one Twitter user has flagged up similarities with artwork by a Helhoughton man following the EU Referendum in 2016.

Bren Goillon from Helhoughton, has painted the EU flag on the side of his house to show the disapointment at Britain leaving the European Union. Picture: Matthew Usher. Banksy’s latest work, located on the Castle Amusements building near the ferry terminal, shows a workman chipping away at one of the stars on the EU flag.

A similar mural of the EU flag was painted by Ben Gollion on the side of his home at The Street, Helhoughton, near Fakenham, in July last year following his disappointment at Britain’s decision to leave the EU.

The flag showed one of the 12 yellow stars on the EU flag, which represent the unity, solidarity and harmony among EU citizens, as a teardrop.

Si Barber tweeted: “Sorry #banksy someone beat you to it by over a year”, with a photograph of Mr Goillon’s art.

Mr Gollion, who cuts down trees for a living, was ordered by North Norfolk District Council to remove the 15ft wide and 15ft high painting by September 2016 as it breached rules on listed buildings and impaired “the visual amenity of the area.”
