Fire crews rescued a second dog from a frozen pond in Toftwood this morning.

The black spaniel fell in to the pond on Hillcrest Avenue, and was helped to safety using a ladder for the dog climb.

The fire service said “luckily” the dog had enough energy to climb the ladder to safety, and added the dog’s owners had been advised to take their animal to the vets.

Today’s rescue is the second to have taken place at the pond in under a week.

Crews were called on Saturday as a cocker spaniel, Pippin, fell in to the freezing pond after she ran to get the bread which had been thrown on for the ducks.

But today Breckland Council, who own the land, said they have no plans to fence the area off because of the ice, or to put up signs.

A member of the health and safety team at the council advise dog owners to keep their dog on a lead near frozen water.

Watch manager Mark Richardson attended both rescues and has urged people not to enter freezing water go onto the ice.

He said: “We completely understand that people love their animals and can see why in the heat of the moment you would want to help a beloved pet.

“The ice can be deceptively thin, the water will be extremely cold and there is no telling how deep the water is or whether there are unseen hazards.”

He added: “Nine times out of ten dogs are able to get out themselves.”
