The Met Office has issued a weather warning for strong winds across East Anglia with the worst of the gusts expected to hit on Thursday morning.

The yellow warning is in place for Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire from 9pm on Wednesday until 9am on Thursday.

The warning states: “Westerly winds will bring gusts of 40-50 mph, and locally into 60s of mph. In addition, rain will be heavy at times, especially over northwest England and north Wales.

“Whilst this weather is not unusual for the time of year, it brings the potential for disruption to transport, tree damage and temporary power cuts.”

Adam Dury, from Norwich-based Weatherquest, said the worst of the weather will hit the region on Thursday morning.

“This evening (Wednesday) there will be gust of 15-20mph,” he said. “At around 5am and into tomorrow’s rush hour is when we will see some of the strongest winds with inland gusts of 40-45mph. On the north Norfolk coast there may even be winds of 50mph.”

He added this kind of weather is not unusual for autumn with the country usually seeing two to three days of similar conditions during the season.

Earlier this week, bookies cut the odds on this being the wettest October on record as the month began with heavy rain and gale-force winds, leading to severe weather warnings.
