A penny farthing on the Fakenham town sign commemorates inventor John Garrood, whose work 150 years ago continues to have a positive impact on cycling.

Yet many people in the town are completely unaware of Fakenham’s proud cycling history.

A festival celebrating that history was held for the fifth year on Sunday.

The Fakenham 50 saw around 300 cyclists riding between 15 and 100 miles in the Norfolk countryside.

The event concluded the annual Get Active in Fakenham Week, which saw dozens of events, based on sports, arts and wellbeing held in the town over nine days.

Mr Garrood invented tubular metal forks and made grips for pedals at his cycle works in Wells Road, Fakenham. These are still used today to make cycling easier and more efficient.
