Football fans in Dereham had a grandstand view of Harry Kane’s injury time winner against Tunisia on Monday night, as the Railway Tavern offered supporters the chance to experience England’s opening match of the World Cup in style.

Landlord Paul Sandford spent £5,000 on a temporary stand outside the pub on Yaxham Road so that fans could gather and enjoy the tournament together.

But he admits the response has been overwhelming, he said: “I expected a crowd, but nothing like that, it was absolutely unbelievable. The stand holds about 100 people and we were full to capacity two hours before kick off. We had nearly 600 people in total last night and it was all good-natured.”

The stand has captured the imagination of the media too. Mr Sandford said: “I’ve done about 25 interviews this week, Sky Sports News were here, even CBS America wanted to speak with me. Nobody had probably heard of Dereham last week, but they have now.”
