More than 40 floats entered the parade and the 1st Toftwood Brownies wowed the carnival judges with their float colourfully decorated to the theme of Alice in Wonderland.

Youngsters dressed as playing cards and characters from the Lewis Carroll book while cardboard cutouts were displayed along the side of their lorry and they even enjoyed a Mad Hatter’s tea party on board.

The group spent many hours on their decorations and were thrilled that all their hard work paid off.

Brownie leader Katie Theobald said they were given four different themes to choose from but Alice in Wonderland was voted their favourite.

“It is actually our Pack Holiday theme for this week,” she said. “The sixers and seconders were the main characters and everyone else playing cards.

“We spent about six of our meetings making the decorations with everyone getting involved.

“A further four hours were spent decorating the float on Saturday and another hour doing finishing touches on the Sunday.

“Some of the Brownie parents were kind enough to give up some time to help with this.

“Our driver Kevin Spinks was fantastic and really got into the carnival spirit.”

She said it was the first time they had entered the carnival parade and to win made it very special.

“We were so surprised to have won as there were some great entries,” she said. “The Brownies were so excited and it was great to tell some of the parents along the route that we had won. It certainly gave them a boost and I think made them sing even louder.”

The group all enjoyed the event, which was held on Sunday, July 16, and they were thrilled to see so many people out cheering on the parade despite the weather.

“There was a great atmosphere and a true community feel to the occasion,” said Ms Theobald.

“We want to thank all the organisers and volunteers who helped make the event happen.

“As a unit we have decided that we would like to donate the prize money to the East Anglian Air Ambulance to help them in a small way, continue with the amazing work they do.”
