A Great Yarmouth mum has spoken of her terror after a rock was thrown at her family’s car while driving near Dereham.

Sarah Fletcher, 34, was travelling home along the A47 towards Norwich with her husband Adam, and children, when an eight-inch rock struck the front of their car.

Mrs Fletcher described the incident as frightening, and said: “Heaven forbid it hit my husband, who was driving. It could have killed my entire family.”

The Fletchers were travelling home on Friday, December 29, after spending time with Mr Fletcher’s family in Nottingham.

They reached Dereham at around 9pm, and were passing Tesco when they saw a large piece of concrete thrown from the roadside towards their car.

They were travelling at 60mph and were the only car on the dual carriageway at the time.

Mrs Fletcher said: “The rock went through our bumper.

“I couldn’t believe it and immediately rang the police.

“They said they couldn’t fingerprint it as would have been exposed to the elements.

“There was a lot of damage to the car. The impact blew out our fog lights, split the bumper in two, and damaged the paintwork.”

But despite the expense, the mum-of-two said she felt lucky it wasn’t anything worse.

She added: “We could have been in a serious road accident.

“My children [five-year-old Sadie, and one-year-old William] were sleeping in the back.

“My daughter woke her brother up screaming as she thought we’d hit another car.

“It was so dark and there was no one around so we didn’t stop.

“It was quite disorienting.”

“I couldn’t face pulling over so we waited until we were at home to have a look.

“I later found the concrete stuck inside the bumper where it had knocked the fog lights out.”

Mrs Fletcher said that repairing the damage would cost more than £1,500.

She added: “I would like to bring this to the attention of others travelling along the A47, in case others have experienced or may experience the same issue.

“The people who did this are endangering lives.”

Norfolk police said the incident took place at around 8.55pm.

They are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crime or have any information to come forward, by calling 101 or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
