Around 12 historic fishing boats from Wells’ past will be on show at a regatta on Saturday evening.

Maritime heritage charity Rescue Wooden Boats is hosting the regatta, with a number of beautifully restored wooden crab boats built between the 1950s and 1970s processing through the harbour from 6pm on Saturday.

Rescue Wooden Boats have successfully restored the much loved former Wells lifeboat Lucy Lavers, which now gives trips afloat in Wells and is also moored on Tugboat Pontoon.

The charity is now fundraising to start work on the Dunkirk little ship Bessie, a former whelker built in 1935 for George Cox, who worked the boat out of Wells harbour.

Bessie was used on a secret rescue mission to cross the Channel and collect a group of eminent men, one of whom was rumoured to include the British Ambassador to Belgium who had been taken prisoner by the Germans.

The regatta can be viewed from Tugboat Pontoon, with people on hand to tell the stories of the boats.
