A village pub has provided a lifeline to its community following the temporary closure of a local shop.

The Fox at Lyng, near Lenwade, has added a mini grocery store to its menu while residents await the reopening of Lyng Stores.

The convenience store had been open in the village for more than three decades and was run by Stuart and Helen Butcher for the past 12 years before they shut the doors for the final time on February 18.

Recently it was announced the shop would reopen under the new management of local women Jenna Youngs and Georgie Rant, and despite a short delay they hoped to open by early April.

In the meantime, The Fox launched a pub shop to help supply residents with everyday essentials such as milk, bread, eggs, cheese, meats, and fruit and vegetables.

Director Victoria Hunt said they were especially keen to make sure there were provisions locally for elderly residents in Lyng.

“If you know any elderly Lyng residents then please spread the word,” she said. “With the bad weather, this convenience could be a lifeline.

“It just started because we got asked to provide just a few bits, like bread and milk, and then we just decided to take the project on.”

Some items will be available at all times and Mrs Hunt said people could call into the pub and ask for them. She advised though, to guarantee items people would need to ring and check availability.

“People are appreciative they can pop to the pub and get some groceries because they relied on the shop.

“If we can keep this going while the shop is closed then that would be nice.”

The team has also organised a weekly coffee and chat morning to reach out to people who may be missing out on community life previously gained at the village shop. It takes place every Friday at 9am with the offer of buy one cup and get a free refill.

The Fox was crowned Norfolk’s Best Pub at the EDP Norfolk Food and Drink Awards 2016.
