The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice which will be in place from 3pm today until 10am tomorrow.

It said East Anglia was particularly at risk from wintery conditions around rush hour today and into the night.

A Norfolk County Council spokesman said a third of counties roads were due to be gritted tonight from 6pm and gritters would be available from 3am tomorrow if needed.

Fakenham Racecourse grounds are also being inspected tomorrow morning ahead of a 2pm race.

The Met Office has warned of very cold overnight temperatures with a severe frost.

It said: “Sleet and snow showers will continue to affect parts of eastern and southeastern England later on Tuesday, lasting well into the night in places. Some mostly small accumulations of snow are likely. Expect some delays to travel, while untreated surfaces become icy, leading to an increased risk of accidents or injuries.”

Chris Bell, forecaster for Norwich-based Weatherquest, said: “Our biggest chance of snow is overnight tonight and first thing tomorrow morning.”

Speaking about tomorrow, he said: “It will be a cold day again. There could be 2cm of snow in the west and central parts of the county. There is a small chance there could be a disturbance to traffic.”

He said Norwich and northern parts of the county could see wintery showers later on tomorrow.

Mr Bell added overnight temperatures could plummet to -2C and most of the snow would settle by 8am tomorrow.

He said temperatures could rise to 3C tomorrow.

Most of today’s snow fell in Fakenham and central Norfolk, as well as some areas to the south.

Other villages and towns which saw snow today were Cromer, Aylsham, Wells, Gresham, Northrepps, Sheringham, Swaffham, Necton, Gorleston, Bradwell and Great Yarmouth.

By 1pm today, Norfolk Police had been called out to 10 accidents, where people were injured, caused by the weather.

They also attended seven damage only incidents on the roads, caused by winter conditions.
