Cameron Kirby, 14, from Bawdeswell has been selected to join the Home Nations Academy for Park & Pipe, thanks to his many achievements in skiing since he began competing at the age of eight.

The ambitious teenager has always dreamt of competing in the international circuit at competitions such as the X Games, Dew Tour and the Olympics and now that he has been accepted into the academy, he stands a good chance of making that dream come true.

Cameron has a strong record of consistently finishing on the podium at competitions and one of his most notable performances saw him win gold at the British Championships in the 12 and under category when he was 10 years old.

Eighteen months ago he moved up to the 16 and under category and in October he once again won gold at the British Championships, this time under the older category.

He began skiing at Norfolk Snowsports Club aged six and started freestyle skiing aged seven. He soon began training with Matt Hyland, the club’s head freestyle coach and has trained two to three times each week ever since.

At the age of nine he was doing his first back flips on skis and at 11 he was able to do a back flip while skiing backwards, a skill known as switch back flips.

He has honed his skills by attending numerous ski camps, which were led by Pat Sharples the Team GB freestyle coach and he has regularly attended training sessions held by Snowsports England which take place around the country.

Most recently, he trained in Laax, Switzerland with the JT Freestyle Academy, at the Zillertal Valley in Austria and at Snow World Landgraaf in Holland.

In 2014 he was named Young Achiever of the year in the Norwich Sports Awards and shortlisted for Norfolk’s Bernard Matthews Youth Award, which recognises young people in the community.
