Because of this, people often find themselves fascinated by imagery of this period; from seeing manual farming in action, to picturing the way we used to socialise.

An impressive collection of about 1,000 photographs capturing every day life in East Anglia in the 19th century will go on sale in Diss on Friday.

The pictures were all taken by renowned mid-Norfolk photographer Herbert T Cave, who spent time living in Dereham and Swaffham.

The collection includes images in various themes, including agriculture, social life, equestrian, retail, scenery and architecture.

Collectively it depicts the nature of East Anglia at the turn of the 19th century in a high level of clarity.

The pictures will be sold at TW Gaze Auction Rooms, on Roydon Road, Diss.

The collection has been separated into about 30 lots and is estimated to be worth a total of £1,000.

Auctioneer and sale organiser Ed Taxil-Webber said: “It’s a lovely collection.

“Herbert T Cave was a renowned photographer in East Anglia and many of his images were used on postcards.

“The majority of the pictures in this collection were taken in Norfolk and they are simple, but at the same time fascinating, images of every day life.

“I believe a lot of these images have not previously been released.”

He added: “Not a great deal is known about Herbert T Cave himself, and there are not many pictures of him around, as he spent his life behind the camera.”

The sale will also consist of about 200 items of photographic interest including cameras, lenses, magic lantern slides and photographs from the 19th to the 21st centuries.

The collection can be viewed on Thursday, from 2pm until 8pm and on Friday from 8.30am.

The sale begins at 1pm on Friday.
