Two officers have been assaulted during an eventful weekend for Norfolk’s police.

On Saturday night at 8pm a man was arrested on High Street, Watton, for assaulting two members of the public.

During the arrest the man punched a female officer in the face. She suffered a split lip.

He was subsequently tasered and restrained. He is currently in custody awaiting interview.

Breckland police tweeted: “Another night, another assault on a police officer. It’s not acceptable and will not be tolerated, and yet again alcohol has played a part.

“There’s far too many people out there who can’t handle their drink and then take it out on members of the emergency services.”

On Friday night a man suspected of assaulting a doorman in Dereham headbutted a male officer.

The incident happened on Market Place.

Police said alcohol was a factor in both assaults.

Norfolk Police and crime commissioner Lorne Green said: “I regard an assault on a police officer as an assault on the community. These officers are there to protect us.”

Mr Green said he and Norfolk Police Chief Constable Simon Bailey have co-signed a letter urging government support for a private members bill to increase penalties on assaults of those in the emergency services.

“I am pleased to say the bill has cleared all its hurdles thus far,” he said. “My understanding is that it next comes up for committee consideration in April.”

From the start of April this year until mid-November, 333 Norfolk police officers assaulted.

Assaults on police officers and staff rose from 73 in 2011/12 to 475 in 2015/16.

Also on Friday night, police in Dereham made arrests for criminal damage and disorderly behaviour.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug following a partnership with door supervisors of licensed premises on Norfolk Street.

And a drink driver was also arrested on Norfolk Street.
