Hundreds of residents gathered for a moving exhibition into the lives of the men of Reepham who died during the First World War.

The Mid Norfolk town lost 196 men during the conflict between 1914 and 1918. However, 13 men were missing from the Norfolk Roll of Honour that was published in the 1920s.

Townsfolk gathered for an exhibition at St Michael’s Church at the weekend, which had been put together over more than two years by local resident Ron Luton-Brown.

Mr Luton-Brown began gathering pictures and details of those men killed, and had collected more than 70 pieces of information.

He is set to work with students from Reepham High School from September to continue the project and to possibly create a book on the town’s First World War connections.

Mr Luton-Brown, who has lived in Reepham for ten years, said: “I am not a local boy and I was curious at seeing the names on the memorial and wanted to know who they were.”

He added that one of the more tear jerking parts of the exhibition was a letter from Sidney Page, who served in the 9th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment, to his seven-year-old daughter, a year before he was killed in August 1917 and buried at Maroc British Cemetery, in France.

Mr Luton-Brown said some of the relatives of Reepham’s war dead had attended ‘Putting a Face to the Name: Reepham Remembering 100 Years’ exhibition at St Michael’s Church, Reepham, at the weekend.

“It has been a very good response. We are getting more information as we go along,” he said.

A vigil of remembrance will be held in St Mary’s Church, Reepham, today between 9.30pm and 10pm where a candle will be lit for each of the 196 men killed in the Great War.
