A Gothic horror film that brought star Vincent Price and director Roger Corman to Norfolk is to return to Norwich for a screening by Hallowed Histories.

The Tomb of Ligeia was shot by American International in 1964 at Swaffham Priory and Castle Acre Priory.

It comes soon after a well-received screening in Norwich of another horror film, the Shuttered Room, which starred Oliver Reed and was filmed at Hardingham in Norfolk.

The Hallowed Histories project is run by Dr Linda McCarthy and Richard Sheppard and involves a monthly podcast, film screenings, live-action broadcast radio plays, creative writing events and children’s activities.

Dr McCarthy said: “The production starring Price and Elizabeth Shepherd was the finale in the Corman/Price Edgar Allan Poe sagas that included other films such as The Mask of the Red Death, The Fall of the House of Usher and The Pit and the Pendulum.

“Mr Corman spent a week travelling from Cornwall to Wales to the Scottish Borders looking for the perfect abbey for the film. Eventually he found Castle Acre Priory and spent weeks adding in extra gravestones and Gothic pillars to make the place look even spookier.

“He took hundreds of photos so he could reproduce the look of the exteriors onto the interior sets at London’s famous Shepperton studios.

“Sadly, the set was burnt down at the end to provide a fiery finale. It became Vincent Price’s favourite of the Edgar Allan Poe adaptations he starred in, partly due to the beautiful exterior shots of the Norfolk countryside.”

The screening will also include the showing of an episode from Anglia Television’s drama series Tales of the Unexpected. In ‘A Stranger In Town’, an enigmatic outsider, Derek Jacobi causes havoc in Norwich.

Introducing the screening will be UEA film studies and media history scholar Professor Mark Jancovich whose research project is Sixties British Horror Cinema.

The screening and Q&A will be held in the Auditorium at the Forum in Norwich on January 26 at 7pm. The event is free, but booking is essential. go to www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/hallowed-histories-15306802800 or follow the links on the Hallowed Histories page www.hallowed-histories.org
