They have fought in harsh conditions all over the world.

So for members of 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards (QDGs) army regiment, a walk through picturesque Norfolk countryside was a far more pleasant mission.

A team of 13 from the QDGs completed a 40-mile walk along the Nar Valley Way on Saturday to raise money for the Roxburgh Children’s Centre, which is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn.

They arrived armed with a stretcher full of Easter eggs, donated by Morrisons supermarket in Dereham.

The QDG members set off at 4am from Robertson Barracks at Swanton Morley, near Dereham, where they have been based since the summer following a move from Germany.

They walked through Beetley, Gressenhall, Bittering, Mileham, Litcham, East Lexham, Castle Acre, West Acre, Narborough, Setchey, West Winch and on to King’s Lynn.

They were joined by staff from Queen Elizabeth Hospital at different stages of the walk.

Roxburgh Children’s Centre was founded by the father of QDG officer Alastair Roxburgh in 2008.

Sgt Stephen Owen said: “We are always looking for ways to help the community and the hospital told us how the Roxburgh Children’s Centre desperately needed some funding.

“With our link to the centre we felt it was important to help.

“It has also been a great way for us to see the Norfolk countryside.

“Many of the guys are visiting these places for the first time and seeing how beautiful this area is.”

It is estimated that the walk raised around £4,000.

The money will help buy new diagnostic equipment and redecorate the centre.
