Jeremy Kyle visits Norwich’s Prince of Wales Road on a Saturday night: “I am not in the business of lying - it was carnage on a Saturday night.”

Tonight ITV presenter Jeremy Kyle shines his spotlight on Britain’s nightlife, and what goes down after dark in Norwich is right at the centre of it - namely on the Prince of Wales Road.

What he found while filming his prime time current affairs series The Kyle Files in the city last September opened his eyes to Saturday nights in what he thought was a peaceful place.

In the programme he sees what he describes as, ‘Paralytic teenagers and people in their early twenties falling out of clubs and needing paramedic help.’ Jeremy admits he is most shocked to witness one man so ‘mullered’ he needs the help of nine people including paramedics to pick up the pieces of his good night out.

Norwich is by no means alone. The show, which also looks at nightlife in Birmingham and other ‘dangers of a night out’ stories from around the country, investigates the misuse of alcohol – and what can be done to change a drinking culture that costs society £21 billion annually.

In Norwich it seems it is wasted resources as much as wasted revellers that shocks Jeremy. He speaks to Phil, a rapid response paramedic from the East of England Ambulance Service, who is exasperated at the repeated calls to save drunks from themselves - potentially at the expense of other serious medical emergencies elsewhere.

Jeremy’s investigation reveals the city’s paramedics receive on average 39 calls per night. On Saturdays that number shoots up to 253, a level that can only be managed with the help of volunteers like SOS Bus workers on the front line.

But why did The Kyle Files come to Norwich in the first place?

Well, Jeremy didn’t just stick a pin in a map. Government figures reveal that Norwich is the fourth worst place in the country for alcohol-related hospital admissions. This isn’t solely down to its nightlife, but Jeremy says he wanted to visit to find out why the city had become such a hotspot for these incidents.

It’s safe to say his producers probably expected some trouble after 2am on the Prince of Wales Road. But the fact that Norwich’s premier party strip - or vomit strewn street, you decide - so predictably delivered it is surely the bigger worry for the city. It is sad that so many good nights end so badly and that so many good people need to volunteer to save people from themselves on a night out in Norwich.

Sorry to say, but Norwich may be The Fine City, but tonight on The Kyle Files you won’t see Norwich at its finest.

The Kyle Files - Dangers Of A Night Out airs tonight on ITV at 8pm
