A weather warning has been issued for snow and ice across Norfolk and Waveney.

The Met Office yellow weather warning is in place for large parts of eastern England from 3pm on Tuesday until 9.30am on Wednesday.

The chief forecaster’s assessment in the warning states: “A band of sleet and snow will turn more showery overnight but with some heavier bursts possible, especially over East Anglia.

“One to four centimetres of snow is possible in places, though rain and sleet may occur along coasts. Ice may be the more widespread hazard.”

There is also expected to be some delays to travel and due to some untreated surfaces, there could be an increased risk of accidents or injuries.

Some parts of Norfolk have already seen wintry showers this week with snow falling across the county on Monday.

Norwich-based Weatherquest forecaster Richard Jones said “it’s colder than average for this time of the year.”

He said Tuesday would get off to a frosty start with a risk of ice across the county.

“Showers are more likely along the north Norfolk coast on Tuesday while inland areas are likely to remain largely dry.

“It will remain cold with highs expected to only reach 3C to 4C.”

His colleague Dan Holley tweeted that slow-moving snow showers in north Norfolk on Tuesday morning could see snow from Burnham Market east to Bacton - and up to six miles inland.

He said there could be between 4cm to 7cm of snow, but many areas would get no snow at all.

The cold weather is set to remain into Wednesday with another frosty start thanks to lows of around -2C to -3C.

“Wintry showers are possible on Wednesday with dustings of snow across Norfolk,” said Mr Jones.

“It will become largely drier through the day with sunny spells, but highs will still only reach around 4C or 5C.”

Thursday will remain cold in the morning but a front will move in from the west during the day bringing the possibility of rain or sleet. Lows are forecast to be -2C or -3C with the highs expected to reach 5C or 6C.

“Friday may not be as cold as the front lingers across the region and there will be a risk of rain and sleet in places,” said Mr Jones.

“It’s looking like the weekend will be a bit milder with temperatures back to 6C to 7C which is average for this time of the year.”

Nationally snow is expected to fall in almost every part of the UK over the next few days.

Norfolk County Council tweeted at just before 4.45pm today: “Gritters are already out across Norfolk and will be going out again at 3am.

“Early warning - looks like we’re likely to be in for some snow from mid-afternoon tomorrow (Tuesday) #norfolkwinter”
