Andrew Tatham, who created an extraordinary exhibition last year based on an old group photograph of a regiment of soldiers about to be dispatched to the front line in the First World War, has a display as part of the Who Do You Think They Are? exhibition.

It took him over 21 years to research and create his exhibition and subsequent book, A Group Photograph, and the display at The Forum gives a taster of his work Before, Now & In-Between.

It also features a new animated photomontage based on 1,250 photographs of the men in the original group photo which are shown in the approximate order in which they were taken, so that visitors can see those who grow old alongside those who grew not old in a nearly life-size projection. There are also touch-screen displays which give further details of his work based on this one group photograph, as described in his bestselling book.

The men in the photograph are the officers of the 8th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, commanded by Mr Tatham’s great grandfather William Walton, and was taken just a few months before they embarked for the trenches in France.

They were nearly wiped out at the Battle of Loos and only 21 of the 46 officers in the photo survived.

The exhibition opened yesterday (Monday, March 13) and runs until Saturday, April 1, 10am to 4pm.

It is presented by The Forum in partnership with Let’s Talk magazine, Age UK Norwich and the Norfolk Heritage Centre at the Millennium Library.

Staff from Norfolk Heritage Centre will be on hand to help and offer advice of other resources available and it will also include a special photograph memorial where visitors can add photographs of their unknown relatives.
