Norfolk professional Andrew Marshall went back in time to win another big event with his hickory clubs.

He travelled up to Scotland in the company of amateur Liam Cameron, a friend from Dereham Cricket Club, to compete in an event organised to coincide with the US Masters.

And he came away with the top prize after recording a total of 294 at four top Scottish courses - Muirfield, North Berwick, Gullane 3 and Kilspindie, all situated on East Lothian’s Golf Coast.

Marshall made a poor start to the Masters of Hickory series, with an 82 at Open venue Muirfield, but bounced back with rounds of 73, 71 and 70 to finish as leading professional.

Cameron also gave a good account of himself to take second nett prize in the amateur competition.

“The most important thing is that we had a really enjoyable time up there, although it’s always nice to win,” said Marshall, who was playing with a treasured set of clubs that were made in the 1920s.

“We had the chance to play four fantastic courses with our hickory clubs and it was a really good test of golf. We were playing off the yellow tees, so the courses were around 6,000 yards, but it was still a big challenge.

“You obviously don’t hit it as far with the old style clubs. I can hit it about 220 yards off the tee while it would be about 280, 290 yards with my usual driver.

“It’s all about manoeuvring the ball around the course, staying out of the bunkers, and using the contours of the land to get it in the right position. It really is great fun.

“It was tough start at Muirfield but overall I was pleased with the way I played.”

Marshall has another big hickory challenge to look forward to in Milan, Italy next month.

He will be forming part of a Great Britain team for a Ryder Cup style match against the United States and is looking forward to the competition now that he has cut down on his touring schedule.

“Last season I played a lot on the Mena Tour but they haven’t got a schedule yet so I think I will be focusing on local events, pro-ams and things like that,” he said.
