Dereham Town’s aim of avoiding a slow start to the campaign will be put to the test at Tilbury.

Manager Matt Henman admitted the Magpies’ patchy early-season form in 2015/16 cost the club once they finally got up a head of a steam in Ryman League Division One North.

With the play-offs now a real target, rather than an outside possibility, it’s vital that Dereham get their push moving in the right direction as early as possible.

An opening-day defeat at Haringey Borough was responded to in fine style thanks to a derby triumph against Wroxham.

But since then it’s been FA Cup action only with a trip to Yaxley, and Tuesday’s subsequent victorious home replay, maintaining some momentum.

The 1-0 midweek triumph – courtesy of Dawid Radomski’s second-half winner which set up a home tie with Holbeach United in the first qualifying round on Saturday September 3 – gave the top-five hopefuls another platform to build from.

The clean sheet was almost as welcome as the win given the fact it was Dereham’s first of the season – and came just days after shipping four during an eight-goal thriller at Yaxley.

Further firepower has since been added with the return of much-travelled Danny Beaumont.

The frontman, who can play out wide on either flank, has completed a series of transfer moves over the last couple of years – often between clubs – but yesterday completed a deal to join Dereham from Wisbech Town.

It will be Beaumont’s third spell at Aldiss Park – the ground where he made his name before making a move to King’s Lynn Town. Wroxham is the other club where the pacy attacker had plied his trade.
