Both sides drew a blank in this mid-table clash at Aldiss Park, writes Rene Kendal.

Dereham made a positive start with Rhys Logan prominent on the right flank. After several flowing passing moves Ryan Crisp just failed to put strike partner Joe Gatting through.

The visitors began to settle and Kris Newby struck a 25-yard effort that was deflected into keeper Will Viner’s arms in the 18th minute.

The Magpies continued to look the more likely, with Logan surging forward, but his cross just eluded Gatting. Minutes later Crisp burst through on goal but was harshly pulled back for a foul on defender Joe Bruce.

Play was then end to end, Jay Eastoe-Smith coolly thwarting Tyrus Gordon-Young deep in the home half before visiting keeper Niklas Freund was forced to punch clear Danny Beaumont’s free-kick into the danger area.

The half ended with Dereham’s Dion Frary and Ryan Crisp both having shots blocked.

After the re-start Adam Smith delivered a teasing ball across the VCD box which Vadim Costandachi returned, but no one was on hand to finish.

The visitors created a good chance with Connor Hogan setting up Newby who could only fire straight at Viner from close range.

Dereham came close to breaking the deadlock in the 74th minute when substitute Robbie Linford shot inches wide after receiving Logan’s square pass.

The Magpies then should have been awarded a penalty when Logan was clattered by defender Joseph when delivering a cross from the right byline.

It was now one-way traffic and Harley Black drilled a 20-yarder over the bar and Logan followed suit following Beaumont’s corner from the left.

In the end defences remained on top and the points were shared.
