Dereham’s Chris Baker has qualified for the Commonwealth Games high jump final at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

The 23-year-old, who went into the Games ranked second in men’s high jump in the UK, jumped the required 2.20 metres to qualify for the final. That is 7cm short of his outdoor season’s best of 2.27m.

UK number one Tom Parsons has also reached the final for Team England, which is due to get under way at 6.35pm on Wednesday.

Baker will almost certainly need to jump higher than 2.27m in the final as that is the lowest personal best of all the 13 finalists.

He will be up against Canada’s Derek Drouin, who has previously jumped 2.40m and won bronze at the London 2012 Olympics and last year’s World Championships in Moscow.

Baker, who currently competes for Sale Harriers, is also up against the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold winner, Donald Thomas, from the Bahamas.
