Thamesmead 5 Dereham Town 2 – Strugglers bring an end to Magpies’ winning run

07:00 17 October 2016

Dereham’s winning run in Ryman League Division One North came to an abrupt end when they were soundly beaten at Bayliss Avenue.

As the teams settled in the early stages Thamesmead’s Scott Kinch struck a long-range volley over Will Viner’s bar. Dereham had their first chance when Jackson Ramm and Tom Walters combined well to set up Joe Gatting outside the box but his curler just missed the target.

Minutes later the home side took the lead with a route one goal. Kinch played a long ball down the right to Jack Mahoney who progressed before lobbing the advancing Viner in the 17th minute. Thamesmead soon increased their advantage with Paul Vines heading home after a defensive clearance was blocked and fell kindly to him with 22 minutes gone.

Thamesmead had two further attempts on goal with Aaron Rule’s shot being deflected for a corner from which Tom O’Conner blazed inches wide. Things got worse for the Magpies after the break when Tom O’Conner fired home from 25 yards in the 50th minute.

Thamesmead netted their fourth in the 58th minute with Rule flicking keeper McCarthy’s clearance onto Vines who confidently drilled the ball home. Crisp reduced the deficit for Dereham two minutes later from close range as they looked for an unlikely comeback. Crisp came close again in the 68th minute as he forced McCarthy to dive full length to save his fierce low drive.

The Kent side increased their lead in the 72nd minute; Keeper Viner made a great save to deny Vines a hat-trick but the ball flew straight to Aaron Rule who had the simple task of heading into the unguarded net.

As play switched ends Crisp was denied again by another smart save from McCarthy. In added time Crisp headed home his second from Danny Beaumont’s centre but this was just a consolation as Thamesmead were convincing winners.
