The heart and soul of the community was lost with the closure of a historic pub, said village residents who gathered to mark a year since the last pint was pulled.

If you felt in a bit of a rut, that life was getting too comfortable and routine, what would you do?

A soldier who died 100 years ago will be fondly remembered in the village where he was born this month.

They were rather sorrowful, almost ghostly, faces peering out of dark canvas with centuries of dust, grime and over-painting concealing any recognisable artistic talent.

The annual Heritage Open Days are a great way of exploring the many historic gems in our county and finding out about its varied past. These are some of the venues open in our area between Thursday and Sunday.
