A trailer that claims to serve "coffee that will wake the dead" has secured a regular plot in Dereham town centre.

Simon Hughes and his partner Tanya Aldus launched Burt's Girls Coffee Co in September, initially intending to serve in a lay-by on the side of the A47.

But Dereham Shopping Centre invited them to serve for one day during the town's Christmas fair - and they proved such a hit that they were offered a regular spot.

The team serves teas, hot chocolates and fresh ground coffees that they claim can "wake the dead."

They offer "every milk alternative you can imagine", vegan hot chocolates and a wide range of sweet syrups.

Mr Hughes said: "Tanya and I have been together since we were 16 - we met at work when I was a chef and she was a waitress.

"I recently had an accident where a drill went through my hand and it meant I couldn't return to work where I was because I just had no feeling in it.

"Tanya also has fibromyalgia and some health conditions that make it difficult for her to work so we decided to start this - it fits really well around our lives and school pick-ups."

The business has family at its core, being named after Mr Hughes' father Burt and having their five-year-old daughter Zoey as its key "hot chocolate engineer".

His older children Tobey, 16, and Jessica, 13, help out less often being at college and school but are a driving force behind the inspiration of the company.

In the future, Mr Hughes said he hopes Burt's Girls will continue to expand into a "coffee empire".

"We aren't going to rush for now - we just want to keep it growing at a natural progression," he explained.

"But we would like to get another trailer at some point and build up into a little coffee empire.

"One day we'd love to get a shop, maybe on the coast overlooking the sea."

Burt's Girls Coffee Co can be found outside Dereham Shopping Centre and is open from 9am until 2pm between Tuesday and Saturday.
