Devastated friends of a “one in million” Norfolk 22-year-old who died in a Scottish climbing accident are holding a memorial concert in his honour.

Rob McCarthy, from Dereham, who always had a passion for the outdoors, died on February 18 from severe head injuries after an eight foot fall from a mountain known as The Cobbler.

Now in a bid to ensure his fun-loving spirit lives on, an evening featuring Rob's favourite music and bands, has been lined up.

And as well as paying tribute to a much loved friend and family member the event is also aiming to raise £1,500 for Loch Lomand's Mountain Rescue Team who valiantly tried to save him.

The proceeds will be handed over to the rescue team in October, when 50 of Rob's friends nearest and dearest will travel to Scotland, spend the night where he lived and climb the mountain where he died.

Best friend and organiser Darren Brooks said: “Rob was a brilliant guy. If ever you were bored all you needed to do was ring him up.

“He was so much fun, he never offended anyone. He was always laughing and joking and making others laugh too.

“It didn't matter whether you met him for 10 minutes or knew him for 10 years. The effect was still the same. There will never be anyone like him again. It hasn't sunk in he's gone.

“He had so many friends. Wherever he went people loved him. “We've done the funeral, we've done the wake, now's the time to remember Rob as he was.

“I just want the evening to be as he would want it. Everyone who ever knew him having a great time.”

Taking to the stage will be three bands; The Deadenders who Rob was a big fan of, 51/50s who Rob's close friend Ollie Cook is in, and A Schizophrenic Outburst, whose drummer is Rob's brother Daniel.

And DJ Lee Brooks, one of a group who all sport a tattoo in memory of Rob, will be playing a selection of Rob's favourite songs.

The event will take place at Dereham Memorial Hall on Friday August 29 from 7pm to 12am. Tickets are £5 available from Sounds, Nunns Way, Dereham, or at the door on the night.
