Be it visiting the ramparts of Norwich Castle or the bright lights of Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile, many will have fond memories of going to see Norfolk's many landmarks.

But some people are just impossible to please.

From Cromer Pier likened to "pointless planks of wood" to complaints that the Broads offers nothing but windmills and swamps, here are seven hilariously harsh Tripadvisor reviews of Norfolk landmarks.

1. Thetford Forest

The vast luscious woodlands of Thetford Forest draw thousands of visitors every year.

While there are lots of attractions and natural wonders to explore, it seems it is not for everyone.

One reviewer said in April this year: "It was the worst experience of my life and I didn't enjoy it at all.

"I went on a walk, tripped a couple of times and nearly stepped in dog poo.

"Such an unhygienic place. I'm never coming here again - sort it out, honestly."

2. Norwich Castle

Norwich Castle is steeped in history and offers an informative and fun day out for many.

But for one visitor, it ranked low compared to other castles around the country.

They said: "It’s the worst castle I’ve ever been to and I’ve been to Stansted Mountfitchet Castle.

"I suppose it’s quite a nice wedding venue but apart from that I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone."

3. Cromer Pier

A trip to the seaside town of Cromer is not complete without a walk along its Victorian pier.

It becomes a hive of activity in the summer, drawing huge crowds to its theatre shows.

However, one visitor found it hard to see the appeal.

They said: "I hate piers and this was no exception. No idea what the point of them is. Grim.

"There is nothing to do. Pointless planks of wood to sit and view the mucky brown water. Only the Brits would call this fun."

4. Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile

Every summer thousands travel to Great Yarmouth for a holiday, trying their luck at the arcades or enjoying some fish and chips by the seaside.

Although it seems this isn't everyone's idea of fun.

One reviewer who visited the town said: "The air is full of greasy smelling food, bright tacky lights from the arcade and run-down shops selling items that look as if they have been there for 100 years.

"Laptop dancing clubs along with kid's arcades just doesn't seem right.

"We won't ever be returning to this area. It wasn't so great 40 years ago, it's not great at all now.

"If you are looking to rekindle memories here, leave them firmly where they are and stay away."

5. Burgh Castle

Burgh Castle is a village that takes its name from a Roman 'Saxon shore' fort built in the third century.

Although the name is perhaps misleading to visitors hoping to find looming battlements.

One reviewer, who left disappointed, said: "This, my friend, is a wall. Indeed I came to this tourist attraction while on my holidays exploring the local area only to find a giant wall casting a shadow over me. Much less than a castle."

6. Broads National Park

The vast waterways of the Broads National Park offer an idyllic getaway for many, offering the chance to jump on and off boats while visiting the beautiful natural surroundings.

Yet the escape from the hustle and bustle is not for everyone.

One visitor said: "There's very little to do when you can actually moor up.

"There are not a lot of nice walks or interesting places.

"There is a couple of interesting places, such as gardens, ruins of an old abbey, an old museum etc.

"But once you've done that sort of thing it becomes stale.

"It is just lots of windmills and more swamps."

7. Norwich Cathedral

In recent years, Norwich's Norman Anglican Cathedral has been trying different ways to draw visitors in.

In 2019, a giant helter-skelter was erected inside, drawing huge crowds eager to have a go on the slide.

But it wasn't welcomed by everyone.

One reviewer said: "The heathens have passed through the gates and are occupying the inner sanctum, with the monstrosity of a helter-skelter towering over everything.

"It seems to have escaped those responsible that there is a distinction between a place of worship and a funfair, or that being trendy has not had a great track record of success for the church.

"It is difficult to admire the rest of the cathedral over the clamour."
