The idea of an outdoor cinema is set to be discussed by a town council.

Listed on the agenda of Dereham Town Council's full council meeting on June 13 is a proposal by councillor Stuart Green for an outdoor cinema, similar to what was seen during the coronation celebration.

The item is accompanied by an email from Mr Green discussing the idea: “Following the coronation a few have decided we could easily run an outdoor film screening with fairly limited resources/work/cost.

“We can hire a screen for a day (Saturday or Sunday), that would cover the screen being put up in the morning and down in the evening.

“Would use mem hall (Memorial Hall) for power/toilets. Possibly for the bar too (if allowed out onto the meadow) or we get Tavern to do a bar. Get a few food vendors to come along and that's pretty much it.”

Mr Green suggests the event could feature a film in the afternoon for children, and later in the day a film for everyone.

He also suggested that if all goes well they could even do it annually with one or two film screenings each summer free for the town.

In the agenda notes on the council website, a document discussing the idea adds: “While a single event may not take much time to organise they always take up some time, which is time people are diverted from other priorities.

“Any thoughts around this suggestion becoming a regular event should really be moved to a committee/balanced scorecard because there will be long-term resource implications for regular events.

“A one-off event takes less resources, but, the council should be very clear that it is a one-off event, otherwise an expectation could arise that, if it were popular, more free cinema would be provided in the future.”

An update is expected after the meeting.
