A heritage railway is hosting a car boot sale to fundraise for an emergency appeal.

The Mid-Norfolk Railway, based in Station Road, Dereham, is hosting the event on Thursday, July 20, from 10am to 2pm, in its car park and station house.

The event is in aid of the railway’s ‘back on track’ fundraiser needed to pay for the restoration of Crownthorpe Bridge, which crosses the B1135 near Wymondham.

Money for the appeal is being raised through the sale of pitches, with £5 for outside, and £7 indoors.

Anyone interested in hosting a pitch needs to be at the station by 9am.

The event is being organised by volunteer Lyn Milns, who works as a ticket inspector.

“I’m feeling optimistic due to the comments being made about it, both on social media and to me,” Mrs Milns said.

“While some people have complained about weekdays car boots not working, I've seen car boots in the week do really well, and not everyone wants a Sunday morning.

“The event will also help raise awareness for us, as money for the appeal to get the bridge back open and get the line running again to Wymondham, as we are all missing out with that service being down."

Some Dereham-based groups will also be there, including Love Dereham, the Dereham-based mental health helpline Listening Post, and the Dereham Ukraine Aid Centre.

The railway is also hoping the event raises its profile for people across the town - Mrs Milns said she had been told that some people living in Dereham had never heard of the attraction.

On the day, the station’s tea room, bookshop and museum will all be open, and there will be a carriage parked on the platform for people to inspect.
