Workers have started installing speed bumps near an infant and junior school which sits in the middle of a notorious rat run.

The bumps will be found in Westfield Road, near Toftwood Infant and Junior Schools in Dereham.

The speed limit is also being reduced from 30mph to 20mph on most of School Lane and Westfield Road, as well as a short stretch of William Cowper Close.

The work is being undertaken by Persimmon Homes is expected to last from August 7 until the end of the month. The summer holidays is allowing the developer to carry out the work while it continues construction on the Foxley Park development.

The proposal to install the nine speed humps was first made last June - and Joanna Pedlow, executive headteacher at Toftwood Infant and Junior Schools hailed their introduction.

Paul Sandford, the landlord of the Railway Tavern in Dereham - who is also a grandad to five grandchildren - four of whom attend either the junior or infant school in Toftwood, and one who starts next September.

Mr Sandford said he was pleased about the humps, as they would improve safety along the road.

“It needed to happen for the safety of the children and is a relief to know they are currently being put in place,” he said.

“Also, I appreciate the fact that this is being done out of school term time, as it has minimised disruption along what is a busy route.

“I just hope that people will now drive more carefully, especially past the school.

“Plus, as a grandad, it is just reassuring knowing that cars will now have to drive at a sensible speed along the way to the school.”

Kendra Cogman, mother of a pupil at the junior school and a Dereham town councillor, previously told this newspaper that while she was pleased about the measures, an issue of congestion would likely remain.
