An outdoor cinema screening that drew more than 800 people has been hailed as a roaring success.

Dereham Town Council hosted the first-time event at Fleece Meadow - behind the Memorial Hall in Norwich Street - as a triple film screening took place Saturday, August 19.

Scores of film fans young and old got dressed up as their favourite characters from the films shown - Disney's Encanto, Grease and the Greatest Showman.

The idea for the screening was put forward by town councillor Stuart Green - who said he was delighted to see such a successful day.

“The weather was perfect, we didn’t have any rain, and the turnout was great,” he said.

“We estimated that around 800-900 people came across the course of the day, to either watch one, or multiple films and it was such a great turnout.

“It was better than we expected, we had no idea how many people would turn up, the night before we were wondering if 50 people might come along, or a few hundred, so it was the best result.

“It is great to have such a positive turnout and see a lot of smiling faces and people enjoying the day. It's what I wanted the day to be."

Market traders also had a good day, with some selling out before the final credits rolled. These included Josh’s Nosh and Bakes By Jas.

Mr Green said he wanted to thank the volunteers, bar staff and food vendors who made the screening happen, along with Viking Stage Lighting, who provided the screen and sound equipment.

Mr Green said: “Everyone who came along was positive. People thanked us for organising and were asking for us to do it again.”

Mr Green said he hoped a similar screening could be held next year.
