Fans of Greggs in and around Dereham will have to head elsewhere for their sausage rolls as the popular bakery goes under a refit.

The branch in Nelson Place, near the High Street, closed this week while it undergoes a makeover.

A spokesman from the firm said the store should reopen by October.

He said: “Our Dereham shop is currently closed for a refit, and we’re excited to welcome customers into the new and improved shop later this month.

"We look forward to sharing more details soon.”

Those seeking a snack will not be short of options in the meantime as the town is quickly becoming a hub for foodies. There is a branch of Starbucks next door, and Norfolk’s own Flour and Bean bakery just over the road.

There are also plans for another similar business next door. Earlier this year plans were approved to change the former Yours clothing store - next to Greggs - into a new restaurant or coffee shop.

Greggs is in the midst of a national expansion on the back of surging sales in 2022, which saw its revenue skyrocket by 23pc to £1.5 billion.

The retailer opened a record 186 new stores last year, and had planned to open 150 more this year.

Greggs is also expanding beyond the high street, and is starting to open branches in airports and supermarkets.

Chief executive Roisin Currie said: "Greggs's strong performance continued in the first half of 2023 as we deliver on our strategic growth plan.

"With consumers remaining under pressure, we continue to offer exceptional value, which is reflected in our performance and growing market share."
