A cafe chain known for its super-caffeinated drinks has opened a large new branch in mid Norfolk.

Costa Coffee has opened a new store at 41 Market Place in Dereham after closing its previous cafe in Nelsons Place.

Town mayor Hugh King cut a ribbon to officially open the shop, which is bigger than the old one.

Mr King said: “We are so pleased to see the unit reopen as a coffee shop, and it will be good competition for businesses and a huge positive for our community to have so many top coffee shops in such a short distance from one another.

“Costa is known worldwide, so that will help within Dereham, the entire town council wishes them well for their future.”

The shop used to be occupied by Italian restaurant Prezzo, which closed in early 2021.

The cafe is operated by Scoffs Group, which is the largest Costa franchisee in the country with more than 100 stores.

The firm has hired four new team members and is still recruiting baristas ahead of the Christmas season.

Vinnie King, Scoffs Group's operations manager, said: “We are really pleased to be able to upgrade our store in Dereham by relocating it to the gorgeous old Prezzo building in the heart of the town.

"Our previous store in Nelson Place was well loved but a little out of the way for our customers.

"We are excited to now be in such a vibrant position amongst lots of other well-known traders and independents."

Earlier this year a study by the consumer group Which? found some Costa coffees were far stronger than their equivalents at other high street cafes.

For example, a Costa medium cappuccino contains 325mg of caffeine, which is around five times as much as a Starbucks cappuccino, which only has 66mg.
