The owner of the building which was home to Dereham's Wilko store has already received interest from businesses to take over the site.

Dencora owns the building on Dereham's High Street that Wilko had been home to until the branch closed on September 24.

Steve Cullum, financial manager at Dencora, said the company has not received the keys back from Wilko - but once it has, and following a review of the property, the firm plans to relist it for another business or businesses to move in.

“We fully expect the unit will be retained for retail use and we have received direct expressions of interest from a number of potential occupiers. We are still in the early stages of the marketing process.

“It is the first time the unit has been available since 2005 when Wilko was the first occupier.

“We hope to be able to make a positive announcement in the not too distant future."

We asked our readers on Facebook what kind of business they would like to see take over the empty High Street unit, with places like Primark, B&M, The Range, Home Bargains, and H&M all mentioned.

One person commented: “Dereham needs more activity centres for kids to go and play games like a hang out for teenagers."

Another commenter added: “A nice independent bistro/cocktail bar/cafè type thing most of the eateries around here are chain.

"[We] have to travel to Norwich for something nicer. Or a book shop or a little role play centre like Tots Town in Norwich would be great in Dereham also, it's either the park or Planet Zoom for younger kids, would be nice to have something else.”
