A piece of Norfolk’s World War Two history has been demolished.

Falcon Crane confirmed that the demolition of the Shipdham Airfield’s former United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) control tower at RAF Shipdham, was completed on October 30.

Shipdham Parish Council chairman Samantha Shelley took the opportunity to visit the site to see the state of the original building, which the council said was in a state of disrepair, with deterioration of the brickwork and concrete very evident.

The council commented unanimously that they had no objection to the application to replace the tower with a replica, and requested that a full photographic record be taken of the building before demolition, for historic record of the site, which was completed by an independent company.

A spokesperson for the council added: “Whilst recognising that some locals feel strongly that the building should be preserved, the expert opinion regarding the state of the building is that it is structurally unsafe and should be demolished."

Falcon Crane bought the site at Airfield Industrial Estate in 2019.
