A town centre road has reopened after a gas leak was fixed.

Emergency gas works had closed Swaffham Road in Dereham, with travel across the town made difficult as temporary traffic lights were installed near The George Hotel.

There had been fears the disruption was set to last for a week with the lights having gained permission from Norfolk County Council until February 5 - but Cadent say the gas leak has been fixed, and it officially reopened this afternoon (January 30).

A spokesman for Cadent said: “I’m pleased to say that over the weekend, the gas leak in Swaffham Road, Dereham, was located and successfully repaired. We are now in the process of having the hole filled and reinstating the road. This should all take place on Tuesday, January 30.

“Once again, we’d like to thank residents for their patience and understanding as this work was completed.

"We know that any sort of road closure can be disruptive but hope that everyone can understand the necessity of doing so.

“If you smell gas, please act immediately and call the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999.”

This will come as a relief for Dereham, especially businesses after a couple said the works across the town are affecting trade.
