A community has helped raise thousands of pounds for an 11-year-old "warrior" battling cancer.

People flooded to Dereham Rugby Club's Eaglesham Park to enjoy a day of rugby and music, with special appearances from singer Leon Mallet and the viral social media star, the Wealdstone Raider.

Corey's Day, which was held on Saturday, has been months in the making after the original date in May was foiled by rain.

The rescheduled event boasted great weather and a "field full of people" to support Corey Kelly, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia earlier this year.

A total of £7,000.24 was raised for Corey and his family.

Paul Sandford, one of the organisers, said the event was "everything and more".

He said: "The whole event was perfect. Hats off to the community. They always pull through when the chips are down and to see a field full of people really made my heart warm.

"I'm such a fan of the little fella, it's difficult not to be. He is just such a warrior."

Although Corey could not make the event, members of his family travelled to Dereham from afar in his honour.

His father, Luke Kelly, said: "We feel completely humbled and positively emotional by the support from Paul and the Railway Tavern and the local community.

"This has given Corey and us another boost to continue this fight knowing we have everyone's support.

"We just want to say to everyone from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you so much for supporting our brave boy and our family.

Mekila Kelly, Corey's grandmother, said in a Facebook post: "It was a very special day in support of my incredibly brave grandson, who sadly was unable to attend the event, as he is in Addenbrooke's Hospital.

"I am sure everyone who knows Paul will agree he really is an inspiration and hero to us all."
