The Central Norfolk Cat Centre is seeking new homes for three older cats.

The trio of "golden oldies" are looking for families as part of the charity's annual Mature Moggies Day, which celebrates the benefits of adopting senior cats.

According to Cats Protection, cats aged 11 or older take more than three times as long to be rehomed as kittens.

As a result, the charity established a special day to highlight the senior cats in their care.

The Dereham adoption centre has a number of older cats in need of new homes for reasons such as their owners becoming too ill to care for them or the arrival of new babies.

Jenny Jenny (Image: Supplied) Emily Thrower, senior welfare and rehoming assistant, said: "Our senior cats have unfortunately had their life upended at an age where they could have expected the pace of life to comfortably slow down.

"We do our best to take care of their every need but we really want to see them adopted as quickly as possible so they can begin a new chapter with loving families."

The cats in need of adoption include Princess, a 13-year-old tortoiseshell, who has been waiting at the centre since March, 11-year-old calico Jenny, who is in need of a quiet home, and Misty, a grey tortoiseshell who loves to play.

Princess Princess (Image: Supplied) Daniel Warren-Cummings, Cats Protection behaviourist, said: "It’s a common misconception that older cats don’t play or interact much with owners, when in actuality, mature cats are just as loving and playful as younger ones.

"In fact, it could even be easier to introduce a mature cat to your home than a younger cat or kitten.

"We’re hoping to show people that an older cat can make the perfect companion, especially if you are battling loneliness."
